Next month is Black History Month and we would like to mark the calendar for events available in February celebrating Black culture and history. Below are a few fun local events to check out!

Friday, February 2nd The Cabot in Beverly will be holding a free event Amplifying Voices: Next Generation Youth Films. This event two day event is held annually with diverse storytelling through films by and about people of color. The full schedule can be found here.

Sunday, February 4th First Congressional Church of Reading will be honoring Black History Month with a special service. “Singing Freedom: The Hidden Messages of the Spiritual” will lead by the reverends and choir. A history of African American spirituals and writings by Black theologists will be included. Learn more here.

Thursday, February 8th Bedford Public Schools in partnership with Parents Diversity Council will have soul food, spoken word performances, music, and a special tribute to Irene Parker (Bedford’s longest servicing METCO director) to celebrate 50 years of METCO.

Saturday, February 10th Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester will be having their Youth Musical Showcase: Black History Month. Enjoy a fun evening of live music composed by Black artists of many cultures and genres performed by students. You can learn more and register at this link.

Saturday, February 17th LynnArts & The Neal Rantoul Vault Theatre in Lynn will be painting Juneteenth flags while learning the symbolism behind the flag. Lunch will be provided and a Black American painter will be introduced through a read aloud. A fun and engaging way to learn and celebrate Black History Month. This is a collaboration with Galleries At Lynn Arts and North Shore Juneteenth Association. You can find more information and registrations here.

February 20-23 during school vacation week Cape Ann Museum will have Black Experience activities, free for school aged children under 18 and their guardians.

Continuing beyond February, there will be a Black Excellence 5K Saturday, April 20th where you can run or walk. $25 fee if you sign up before March 28th. Funds raised for the race (or walk) go to North Shore Juneteenth Association for future events.
